I'm Rod.
I co-founded Culture Amp and spent more than a decade helping it grow from an idea into a company of more than a thousand people. These days I coach founders and product leaders, sit on a couple of boards, and back early-stage companies as a venture partner at Rampersand. I've also co-founded a new social enterprise, Easy Hello, which I'm building from the ground up.

What I've actually done
I've been a product leader, a co-founder, a CPO, and a board director. I've hired well and hired badly. I've shipped things that mattered and killed things I loved. I've led through growth that felt impossible, and through the quieter stretches where the hard part was keeping people believing.
Most of what I know, I learned by getting it wrong first. That turned out to be the useful part.
What I do now
It's a deliberately mixed bag — company building, investing, coaching, mentoring, volunteering. Different rooms, different stakes. The thread through all of it is the same: helping other people do their best work.

Why I coach
The conversations I've valued most were never really about strategy or product. They were the ones where someone helped me see myself clearly, right when the stakes were high and the path wasn't.
That's what I try to be for the people I work with. Not a consultant with answers. A thinking partner who's stood where you're standing. I won't flinch from telling you what I see.
What I believe about leadership
- 01
You don't lose. You win or you learn. The hard part is wanting the lesson almost as much as you wanted the win.
- 02
Trust people before they’ve fully earned it. The experience of being trusted is often what turns someone into the person you were hoping for.
- 03
Don't be a nice leader. Be a kind one. A nice leader tells their team what they want to hear. A kind leader tells their team what they need to hear, and does it with care.
- 04
The team that learns fastest wins. Optimise for speed to learning over speed to building, and celebrate the learning, not just the launch.
- 05
Hold your opinions strongly enough to test them and loosely enough to be wrong. The best people I know are genuinely humble about their own ideas.
Off the clock
When I'm not working I'm usually with family. I'm a husband, a dad, a brother and a son. I ride mountain bikes badly, brew beer at home, and I'm genuinely elite at driving my kids to their basketball games.
